Steve Van Zandt
In 1977 while enrolled at UC Santa Barbara Steve took a year-long internship as a naturalist/teacher with San Mateo Outdoor Education. Here he began writing songs that supported the environmental concepts that were being taught. After graduating with a BA in Environmental Studies he returned to outdoor teaching. During this period Steve and three fellow naturalists formed the Banana Slug String Band. As of 2011 the band has produced 11 award winning recordings, a picture book, performed nationally and have led teacher/naturalist workshops for over 30 years. Steve’s songs and curricula appear in numerous teacher guides. Steve also worked as a teacher in a variety of k-7 classrooms before returning to San Mateo Outdoor Ed in his current position as Site Director/Principal. Steveenjoys music, poetry, ping-pong, vegetarian/vegan cooking, backpacking, white water rafting, surfing and swimming under waterfalls. With three children now out of the house Steve and his wife, Laura, garden and raise chickens at their home in Bonny Doon, California.
